I have been a freelance writer for multiple websites. That’s not to say that I have been writing for long… I have been writing for about six months now and as a freelancer is hard to get a stable job that would last more than a couple of months.
Becoming one is not really hard either… All you need is consistency and standards.
As long as you keep delivering work on time and meeting at least some decent standards then you are set! You can easily make some money, and while that might not be a lot of money is not negligible either.
You would be surprised however at the sheer amount of different topics I have had to write about so far.
I have written articles about acne, fitness, make up (even though I’m a man), politics, legal matters and Gaming (finally!)
I have been writing mainly Gaming articles for a while now (which is why I actually wanted in the first place) and that has made me come to realize the nature of this work.
You see as a freelance writer there are two kinds of jobs you will get… The ones you actually have an interest and want to write about, and the ones that make you wonder, “Who the hell is reading this?”
Your approach to each will vary greatly of course.
Articles You Actually Have An Interest In
There are no better days than these, you have a set of three to five articles to write about a topic you are curious or even passionate about.
You are actually motivated to learn this things so you research deeply (much more than you actually need to write the article) and after hours of research you sit down and just let the juices flow…
You have read so much that you already have an educated opinion about the topic and you believe you are the one who holds the truth. So you write it down and you might even give not only your arguments… But also analyze and argument about every other idea being wrong.
And that feels great! It feels great to develop an interesting and complicated opinion, it makes you feel like you know more than anyone else, and knowing that people will read your arguments and that they might just change their minds about a topic is even greater.
Then there are these other days…
Articles You Can’t Believe You Are Writing
As you will learn, until you have some experience and a decent portfolio you will have to write about whatever is offered at you!
Better to make a few bucks than keeping your values and self respect I always say…
Seriously you will need to get some momentum or you will never get a steady flow of work to earn any money!
So I had to write articles about celebrity gossip (freaking Brad Pitt And Jolie Divorce) that made me question whether I wanted to do this for a living, and made me feel I had fallen as low as possible…
And the worst part is having to do the research for something you hate! You need the money so you do it but you just hate yourself a little bit for doing it.
Most writers I know just “write” a Franken post, mixing about 3 to 5 articles on the subject.
And I do too… The only difference is that I speak three languages so I just search for articles in other languages and translate the content so I’m 100% sure I won’t get caught!
That doesn’t mean the work is bad it just means starting and getting to a point where you define your market is though! It will take a couple of months before you actually get to write mostly about what you want to write but it will be worth it, Trust me!
And for people looking to hire freelance writers, keep in mind what I just said! Look for someone who actually has an interest in the subject and not just the guy with experience… Cause he might just be me and “write” an article that is just a mix of different articles in different languages (and trust me, you won’t know I cheated)
