If you like reading weird things on the internet (and since you’re on robek.world odds are you’re into that kind of shit) then you’ve been to reddit. And reddit is great, it’s one of the only sites where anyone can come and discuss anything topic they want. The only problem with reddit is that fucking anyone can come and discuss anything they fucking want.
In case you aren’t familiar with reddit, I’ll try to explain it. Imagine a place filled with hundreds of thousands of people, and anyone can break off into a little group (called a subreddit) to talk about anything they want. Sounds amazing right? Anyone from around the world can start a discussion about the topics they care about, and share information with people who have similar interests.
So why is reddit the internet equivalent of sitting on a wet bus seat?
I guess there are just some types of people who shouldn’t mix for example, the Donald Trump subreddit, and the Pro-life subreddit. No matter how you feel about either of those two groups, you can imagine that a website where those two opinions collide could have some pretty heated flame wars (heated flame wars, get it?).
Reddit understand that it’s community is pretty awful. In fact, most reddit users spend their whole time on the site complaining about how bad the community is, because of how many people are always complaining. One of the problems that reddit faces is the rating system they use. When someone makes a good post, it gets ‘upvoted’, and more people are likely to see it. And when people make a bad post, it gets ‘downvoted, and it gets a negative ranking. That in itself isn’t bad, but because the users of the site are human being, people abuse the system, and there are storms of downvotes a quality content, and huge waves of upvotes on trash posts, pretty much just to mess with the system.
Reddit has a problem that every other website has, people.
Sites like reddit get a bad rap for all of the negativity that they harbor. But honestly, reddit isn’t that bad. The community may be shit, but it’s a great place to stay informed about things that you’re interested in. Do you have some weird science question you want to ask? Do you want to know what everyone’s favorite Friends episode is? Do you want to see weird news stories about air conditioners? Reddit is the place for that. And if you can get past the 13 year olds fighting in the comments section, you can actually learn a lot.
And the truth about it is, reddit has been around for a long time, and it’s not going anywhere. So next time you need to see a cute picture of a baby rabbit, or the trailer for that new movie you don’t actually care too much about, you know where to go.
